Apple Picking Will Get You In the Autumn Spirit At These Washington D.C. Area Orchards

BY Blog Editor

As the air cools and the leaves change colors, it’s obvious – fall is in the air here in Washington D.C.! One of the best ways to get in the autumn spirit near our Wray apartments is to head out to the orchard for a day of apple picking, an activity that’s just as fit for a six-year-old as it is for a 60-year-old.

Here near our Wray apartments, we have tons of orchards that offer a day out on the farm complete with hay rides, cider doughnuts and more. As different varieties of apples are ripe at different times of the season, check these orchards’ websites to see if they have your favorite this weekend!

Waters Orchard, located at 22711 Wildcat Rd, Germantown, MD which is 40 minutes from your Wray apartment, is a scenic apple orchard with owners that have a great love for farming, respect for the environment and a passion for fresh, local food.

Owner Washington grew up on his family’s farm surrounded by an azalea nursery and beef cattle, and co-owner Susan was raised at a nearby orchard, where she was immersed in growing fruits and vegetables. Their similar backgrounds led them to each other and to the realization that they shared the lifelong dream of starting their own farm.

Butler’s Orchard, located at 22222 Davis Mill Rd, Germantown, MD which is 35 minutes from your Wray apartment, is a family-focused farm with pick-your-own patches, a kids’ play area and hayrides, plus a market and cafe.

Right after graduating, George and Shirley Butler purchased a 37-acre farm with a log house, where the Butler family grew up. Initially they grew 25 acres of peaches and sold them to a local grocery store and at their own small farm market. Now, they have more than 25 varieties of fruits, vegetables, flowers and trees on over 300 acres!
